| Ft Monroe was built between 1819
and 1834. It was named after the fifth president of the
United States, James Monroe (1817-1825). During the
civil war it was a union strong hold. President Lincoln
visited Ft Monroe during the war.
Confederacy
President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned here from 1865 to 1867.
Fort Monroe became the Headquarters of the United States Army
Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in 1973.
