OLD CAPE HENRY
LIGHTHOUSE
Old Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first lighthouse authorized
by US congress. Due to delays of funds and the Revolutionary
War, construction finally began in 1791 and completed in 1792.
It is a 90 foot tall octagonal sandstone tower and not
painted. Confederate raiders destroyed the lens which was was
replaced in 1863. In 1870 the tower began to crack and was
decommissioned in 1881, when the new lighthouse was completed.
